Ten Hag is optimistic about Rashford’s injury

Manchester United and Sevilla meet in the quarter-finals of this season’s Europa League as Erik ten Hag’s men continue to search for success in cup competitions.

The Dutchman has already secured one title in his first season as manager at Old Trafford and his side can contest two more, with United still in the FA Cup and hoping to go further in that competition.

They face tricky opponents this evening even though Sevilla are serial winners of the Europa League. The Spanish team has won the tournament a record six times and has enough experience to reach the final stages of the knockout stages. There is added incentive for them to perform well, as a poor domestic season sees Sevilla languish in the bottom half of La Liga, meaning that success in the Europa League will be their only way back into European football next season.

Despite the favourites, United will not be able to call up Marcus Rashford who has a groin problem so Anthony Martial is expected to feature in his stead.

17 min: This early goal is exactly what Ten Hag wanted. It just deserts them for a positive start and gives them a great platform from which to put in a decisive performance in the first leg.

It was a great start from United and they are progressing through the loan midfielder. Fernandes picks up the ball from deep and the United captain puts a superb pass into Sabitzer on the edge of the penalty area. The Austrian takes a brilliant touch to deflect it to his left and deflect his effort over Bono and into the net.

13 minutes: Save! Martial was lively in these opening stages and the Frenchman made another positive burst on the left. He gives it back to Anthony who uses his power well and eventually fires a shot into the near post which Bono tipped around the corner.

He’s only been here for one season, but it’s a really big milestone for Ten Hag – his 50th game for the Red Devils.
