The seismologist says he does not expect a tsunami to hit Vancouver Island after the quake

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Vancouver Island this morning, but no impact is expected on land.

The quake occurred at 8:55 a.m. on April 13 about 200 kilometers southwest of Port Alice, Canadian Natural Resources seismologist Brindley Smith said.

Smith said there was no damage and no tsunami was expected.

“We’ve been following up with the Tsunami Warning Center and haven’t seen anything since,” Smith said.

Smith also said there have been no reports of the earthquake being felt, but he encourages anyone who feels it to fill out the “Did You Feel It” survey, which can be found on the earthquake website.

“We always encourage people to be prepared in the event of an earthquake that could lead to serious damage – of course, we are always concerned about a major earthquake,” said Smith.
