VANCOUVER – A magnitude 6 earthquake shook the sea floor a few hundred kilometers off Vancouver Island.

The National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska says a dangerous earthquake wave is not expected.

The US Geological Survey website showed that the earthquake was only slightly felt in areas ranging from Port Hardy, just over 200 kilometers from the epicenter, to Kitimat, more than 500 kilometers away.

Earthquakes Canada estimated the quake, which occurred around 8 a.m. local time, to have a magnitude of 5.8, while the Tsunami Warning Center said it had a magnitude of 6.2.

The epicenter was along the eastern edge of the Juan de Fuca Plate off Vancouver Island.

Earthquakes are common off the coast of British Columbia, although usually not of this magnitude, as movement from several different plates and subduction zones causes thousands of earthquakes each year.

The USGS says this quake was also felt along the US northwest coast from Washington state to as far south as Corona, California, approximately 2,000 kilometers away.
