A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the ocean floor off the coast of Vancouver Island Thursday morning.
The US Geological Survey said the quake was detected just before 9:00 am at a depth of eight kilometers below the surface. It was about 230 kilometers southwest of Port Hardy.
The USGS rated the quake as a 6.0, but Natural Resources Canada estimated the quake to be slightly weaker at a 5.8.
The Natural Resources Canada website says that a magnitude 5.8 to 6.0 earthquake can cause significant damage to poorly constructed buildings in small areas, but at most will only cause minor damage to well-designed buildings.
