Peter Schmeichel said Manchester United players should be “embarrassed” as they faced a draw with Sevilla at Old Trafford.

United were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by the Andalusian side, who went on to win a record six times in the Europa League, despite taking a two-goal lead in the first 20 minutes. Marcel Sabitzer fired twice for Erik ten Hag’s side into a lightning hole.

But despite their dominance in the first half, United were slow after the break and suffered a nightmare run in the second half. Having already lost Raphael Varane to injury and Bruno Fernandes to suspension in the second leg, there were own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire on either side of Lisandro Martinez’s injury.

The two late goals turned the game on its head with a week to go in the second leg in Sevilla, but United may be more concerned about keeping Martinez out with a long-term injury. With Luke Shaw, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford currently missing, coach Erik ten Hag faces a small injury crisis before the match.

The club’s former goalkeeper Schmeichel succumbed to Ten Hag’s side losing the lead in a match that was now in the balance. The Dane pointed the finger at the club’s players for throwing the lead against Sevilla.

“It’s a fair enough result, the way it developed in the second half,” Schmeichel explained on BBC Radio 5 Live after the match. “The Manchester United players missed a very good opportunity here.

“Few players today need to look at themselves and think if they are contributing enough to the team. There are few players who should be embarrassed by their performance.”
