A strong earthquake hits the Indonesian island of Java, and there is no danger of a tsunami

(Reuters) – A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck deep on the Indonesian island of Java on Friday, but there was no danger of a tsunami, the Indonesian Geophysics Agency said.

The agency said that the earthquake was at a depth of 632 km, and aftershocks were felt after about 20 minutes, with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale.

The disaster agency said the quake was felt in the urban centers of Surabaya, Tuban, Semarang and Denpasar in Bali.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) estimated the magnitude of the initial earthquake at 6.5 at a depth of 592 km.

“There is no word of damage so far because the quake was very deep,” Abdul Mahari, a spokesman for the National Disaster Agency, said by telephone.

Indonesia lies on both sides of the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a very active seismic zone, where different plates on the earth’s crust meet and cause a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

An employee at the Mustica Hotel in Tuban told Reuters by phone that the quake was felt lightly and no damage was reported.

An employee of the JW Marriott Hotel in Surabaya said the earthquake was strongly felt there, causing panic among the guests.

“All the guests got out of their rooms and out of the hotels. But there was no damage,” the employee said over the phone.
