Liverpool raised the white flag when trying to sign Borussia Dortmund star Judd Bellingham this summer due to his price tag – but that won’t affect Jurgen Klopp’s commitment
Klopp admits defeat in Liverpool’s pursuit of Bellingham
Jurgen Klopp won’t quit Liverpool if he doesn’t get the money to sign Judd Bellingham, insisting: “This is my team.”
The Reds boss insisted he was too professional to get angry – and indicated that even if he did, he would not change anything in terms of Anfield’s finances. Although he did not refer to Bellingham personally, Klopp has made it clear he does not think it is reasonable to pursue a player who may not be available, or who is outside Liverpool’s budget when they need several big signings in the summer.
When it was pointed out that he could choose the clubs that could bear such a signature, he replied: “But that’s my team. Nothing. Do you want to suggest that I resign from here and wait for the next senior job? Really? That’s my team.”
On the subject of Bellingham, Klopp hinted forcefully that Liverpool simply did not have enough encouragement to believe they could sign him this summer… and suggested that such a blind pursuit could jeopardize other important signings.
He added, “What you want to know is that I’m sitting here, am I angry because we can’t do this or that. No I’m not. I’m not, I don’t agree all the time with everything we do… But I’m an employee here.”
“I’m not here to be angry about things that will or won’t work. If I’m angry, we suddenly don’t have any more money or resources to do everything. So it’s trash (to get angry), it’s okay—I’m a little too professional.”
“You work with it, make the most of it. We’re not kids. If a five-year-old wants a Ferrari for Christmas. You wouldn’t say, ‘That’s a good idea.’ You could say it’s too expensive. You can’t drive it anyway.” If this kid has spent his entire life unhappy because he can’t have a Ferrari, that’s a sad life.”

Klopp knows the subject of Bellingham is an emotional one for fans, with many worried he could walk away from the Anfield job after being so keen to sign him over the past three years.
But he made it clear that the club simply did not get the right vibes from interested parties – the player himself and his club Borussia Dortmund – to make the deal seem worth pursuing.
“We have to make sure, we have to make decisions for the team and for the club and we can’t dream, we can’t get angry if we don’t get this or we don’t get it. If there’s no chance for that, why do we do it?” he said.
“Budget is important and then timing is important, knowing when things can happen is important. Safeguards are important, if we go to them, it is important that we get them. If you focus too much on something you might just get, the rest of the market can disappear.”
“The first thing is when you’re convinced of something and you want to do it, you need to create a feeling that when the process happens it can work. If you don’t have that feeling, it’s holding you back.
“You can’t fight for Kylian Mbappe from now on and say, ‘This is the only player we want to attack’ and then realize he goes to Real Madrid or stays at PSG, for example. That doesn’t make sense.
“Prices you may or may not know and prices change over time but that’s it. I never understood why we’re constantly talking about things we theoretically can’t have.”
Klopp admits he is unhappy at times not achieving the goals he wants but admits it wasn’t his call for budget… and the past has shown Liverpool can still compete in the transfer market.
“Again, obviously other clubs can do more in some situations than us – I’m the wrong person to ask about that, but that’s it,” he said. “I’m always here to explain it, and that’s the not-so-nice part to be honest. We’re not talking about my money.

“It’s a hot thing, but we see now, there are 12 players in midfield that we can sign. There are a lot of good players, frankly, yeah, a lot of good players – and we’re interested in all the good players, and some of them will end up here.”
When asked if that would allow him to put Liverpool back on top – after this season’s dramatic collapse – in the three years he has left on his contract, he answered defiantly.
“For us to play football to be successful, yes it must be possible, of course it is possible to rebuild in three years. Of course it is better to play much better football than we did this year, it must be possible.
“The way we’ve done things in the past is the way we’re going to do it in the future, that’s the way it is. I can’t change that, no one can change that by the way.”
“Bring in a new manager, he’s sitting there, these are the numbers, and here we are — that’s the way it is.
