Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez released a statement following the injury at the end of the season

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has thanked fans for the “incredible” messages of support they have received following news that his metatarsal injury has ruled him out for the rest of the season.

The Argentine star fell clutching his foot in the late stages of the 2-2 draw in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals with Sevilla on Thursday, after he was helped off the field and then carried into the tunnel.

The centre-back has become a giant in defense for Erik ten Hag since his summer arrival, and his absence comes as a severe blow for the Reds, who are chasing Champions League qualification.

United will also have to compete without Raphael Varane for the next few weeks after he was taken off at half time following a strike against Sevilla. They join Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Donny van de Beek – whose season has also ended – among others on the injured list.

Martinez – who has made 45 appearances and kept 19 clean sheets – has now sent a message to the United fans, vowing to come back from injury “stronger” and reflecting on his first season at Old Trafford.

Writing on social media, he said: “Not the way I imagined the very special season would end but sometimes we run into hurdles along the way that we have to overcome to make us stronger and learn from them.

“I know I will be back very soon looking for more. In the meantime, I will continue to support all my teammates to achieve our goals.

“The number of messages and support I have received has been amazing, it gives me strength and encouragement in this moment. Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart.”

He also named his Argentine teammates Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel of Sevilla to help him off the pitch after his injury, as seen on his Instagram post.
