An Indian gangster turned politician has been shot dead on live TV.

Ateeq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were taken for a medical examination in handcuffs at the time of the attack.

The two men have been identified by camera crews – and police say the gunmen who killed the two were posing as journalists.

Three people were arrested at the scene and a police officer and a news reporter were injured.

According to NDTV, Ahmed’s lawyer said he was shot in the head at close range.

Opposition politicians condemned the killings and claimed that the government in Uttar Pradesh was lax in dealing with the crime.

One politician, Akhilesh Yadav, wrote on Twitter: “When a person is killed by public shooting amid a police cordon, what about the safety of the common people?

“As a result, an atmosphere of fear is created among the audience; it seems that some people are deliberately creating such an atmosphere.”
