Stop joking about being bad at math, says rishi sunak

Today Rishi Sunak suggested that people should not make jokes about being bad at maths as he laid out his plan to improve the nation’s arithmetic skills.

The Prime Minister used a speech in central London this morning to pledge to change the “anti-math mentality” in the country.

He criticized the “cultural sense that it is okay to be bad at math” as he argued that this point of view should be socially unacceptable.

He announced an expert-led review of how to implement his plan to ensure all students in England study some form of maths until the age of 18, without making A-level maths compulsory.

Asked how he intends to change attitudes towards mathematics, Mr Sunak said: “It’s about having a conversation as a country about us just to change how we approach this, so it’s not okay to say ‘well, I don’t do math’ and everyone laughs.” It didn’t happen overnight.

“I think we’ve all, if we’re honest with ourselves, been in conversation where that has happened and it’s okay, but there isn’t a single person here who will proudly declare ‘Well, I can’t read’ or ‘I can’t read’ ‘I don’t read, that’s not me'” .

Mr Sunak admitted that the government would need to hire more specialist mathematics teachers in order to implement his plan.
