WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A strong earthquake shook Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, but no major damage or injuries were expected, officials said.
The USGS said the 6.3-magnitude quake was centered in West New Britain County at a depth of 55.7 kilometers (35 miles).
She added that the earthquake caused a strong tremor, but the economic losses and casualties are expected to be small.
Papua New Guinea is located in the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, east of Indonesia and north of Australia. It sits on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where much of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic activity occurs.
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck a remote area of Papua New Guinea earlier this month, killing at least four people and destroying more than 300 homes.
Last September, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed 21 people.
