WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – An earthquake occurred off the coast of North Carolina Wednesday afternoon.
The USGS says the 4.5-magnitude quake occurred around 12:07 p.m. hundreds of miles offshore.
A tsunami was not expected from the earthquake due to its relatively small magnitude and depth of more than 6 miles below the ocean floor.
Earthquakes off the Carolinas are not unheard of but they don’t happen often.
