Manchester City secured their place in the FA Cup Final with victory on Saturday, Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Sheffield United 3-0 at Wembley, and Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick for the Premier League side.
It seems a long time ago that Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed Manchester City as “noisy neighbours”.
City are now so much better than their Manconi counterparts that when they choose to have fun at United’s expense, they can do so nicely rather than in quite the sloppy way they did when they threw a ‘Welcome to Manchester’ party upon the signing of Carlos Tevez. In 2009, the incident prompted Sir Alex to make his disapproving comment.
Pep Guardiola need not be too bombastic or stir up local rivalries in reminding the world that Old Trafford is indeed in Salford City. He only indulged in some light teasing as City took another step towards emulating United’s historic treble of 1999.
Someone asked Guardiola if United fans should be afraid. Guardiola smiled, saying, “There is no need to be afraid.” “We are neighbors and neighbors are always kind to each other!” No more annoying brutal neighbors after that.
The town has so well adapted to the neighborhood that they have taken over it with excellent manners, taking in friends who used to frequent your soirees and organizing a celebration street party. There’s nothing more annoying than not being able to look down your nose at snooty neighbors.
Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick for Man City to secure their place in the FA Cup final. The Algerian winger opened the scoring from the penalty spot against Sheffield United on Saturday. Pep Guardiola came one step closer to achieving a historic season of treble wins.
United fans should be afraid. Very afraid. ‘We are very far away.’ [from the treble]Guardiola repeated again on Saturday, which you would think would be his motto between now and June 10, should they reach the Champions League final.
And he is right. It’s the last steps that are the hardest. Still, one appointment was booked. The FA Cup final on June 3 will see City take part after they overcame the defiant resistance of Sheffield United here. Manchester United can join at that time.
On Wednesday night, the city may remove another roadblock in this historic endeavor. Beat Arsenal and, as the format suggests, they will, and they will have a hand in the Premier League Cup. Who can stop them? Certainly not Sheffield United. Nor can you, you suspect, be United nor Arsenal. Maybe Real Madrid.
This obstacle on the way to the Pantheon was cleared as easily as most people expected. Not that Sheffield United, who are likely to join City in the Premier League on Wednesday, should be ashamed of it. Indeed, this was a better display that many Premier League teams have put up against City. They hurried on and lingered in the city for 42 minutes to the point of frustration.
Perhaps it was a shame that Sheffield United’s moment came after 88 seconds. Because you know there might only be one against Manchester City. And playing another 88 minutes and 32 seconds knowing you probably should have scored is a soul-destroying experience.
And it was a great moment. Manchester City had conceded an early corner kick; Oliver Norwood swung it in and John Egan got a powerful header on the ball, which bounced and fell to the feet of Elimane Ndiaye from six yards out.
Mahrez and Erling Haaland celebrated after the winger’s opening goal at Wembley on Saturday The Blades will be disappointed they were unable to pose more of a threat to Pep Guardiola’s side.
And that was the point Sheffield United fans could believe. City were exposed, only Stefan Ortega stood between Ndiaye and the goal. What sport might Sheffield United make of this game if they unexpectedly progress?

However, Ndiaye could not move his feet fast enough to land a powerful blow at him. He got his shot but Ortega pulled back to stifle the effort. And the moment passed. The plan was to use set pieces to shake up the city. “And the only way to do that is to take a risk when it comes,” said Paul Heckingbottom.
It’s not that Sheffield United don’t have more forays after that. And Sheffield United never gave up. It’s just a precious clear vision of a goal that, once wasted, doesn’t come back. Instead, they resumed what was always going to be a risky rear guard job.
And they performed with confidence, Egan flattering and organizing while Anil Ahmadudzic and Jack Robinson did their best to keep legions of City strikers at bay. Corners cleared, tackles made and men tracked down.
Haaland blasted the ball into the net with a stunning 35-yard shot so hard on the ground that you suspect goalkeeper Wes Foderinham wouldn’t have come close to it if he had tried. This was the kind of scorers strikers scored in comic books, not in real life, but the referee fouled Stuart Atwell. Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez tried curling shots from outside the box, a corner followed but Sheffield United held on.
As such, the method of retreating was extremely frustrating. The danger passed when a cross was shot by Bernardo Silva’s volley. But Daniel Gibson, who returned to help with the defense, panicked. The ball was bouncing around Silva, so perhaps he was afraid of another strike, although in reality there was little threat and no obvious chance, however, Gibson dived. He may have been given a bit of the ball, but he also took a good bit of Silva’s legs wide, and as such, once the VAR had done its thing and checked, the penalty remained.
They are masters of the tough jobs at Manchester City. You miss a penalty kick and you’re sent off. It doesn’t matter that you’re chasing Dixie Dean’s all-time record of 63 goals in a season.
Erling Haaland had failed midweek against Bayern for the first time this season and was ruled out. Riyad Mahrez, who shot the ball into the right corner with relative ease, went up 1-0 in 42 minutes.
Mahrez collects the ball of the match after his historic hat-trick in the semi-finals at Wembley
I just felt that had Sheffield United made it through the first half, there might have been hope, a chance to get back up again. It wasn’t that the match was immediately 1-0.
But it was at the hour when Max Lowe found himself in possession of Mahrez, who simply made a honeyed line of goal from 45 yards, ran straight through and through the halves of Egan and Robinson to flick the ball past Foderingham. “I can’t get away from the fact that we gave City the first two goals,” said Heckingbottom.
Mahrez was now hitting a hat-trick and quickly completed the job in the 66th minute, as Grealish cut in from the right and found Mahrez, who fired the ball home to make it 3-0.
At this point Erling Haaland and Grealish come in as Guardiola prepares for an even bigger test ahead. Some of the biggest names in European football will be left out. Now, it would be foolish to bet on them.
