A test of the new National Emergency Alert System failed to pop up on some phones this afternoon and other alerts arrived late.

Many people across the country reported not getting an alert at 3 p.m., when a powerful 10-second blast was expected to go off.

Tom Brentke of Bournemouth said: “Nothing happened here in Bournemouth. The mine didn’t explode!”

Several individuals on the three mobile network also reported that they did not receive the alert.

The company later said it was “working closely with the government to understand the cause and ensure this does not happen while the system is in use”.

The system is designed to warn the public if there is a danger to life nearby. Once established, the system is designed for use in life-threatening situations including floods and wildfires.

Newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden said there was no need for action today, but in the future it might be “the voice that could save your life”.
