Fox News and its biggest star, Tucker Carlson, have reportedly been fired by the network’s owner, Rupert Murdoch.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, comedian Jon Stewart, and Fox News reporters reacted — mostly with celebration — to the news.

Mr. Carlson’s last broadcast was on Friday, April 21st. He was not given the opportunity to say goodbye or issue an autograph.

Fox News Tonight will air in Carlson’s timeslot featuring a rotating list of hosts until the network chooses a new permanent host.

Carlson’s departure comes less than a week after Fox News announced it would pay Dominion Voting Systems $787 million to settle the latter’s termination lawsuit. Dominion sued Fox News for spreading falsehoods that the polling technology company engaged in widespread voter fraud during the 2020 election.

As The Independent reports, Carlson left behind a legacy of bringing far-right and racist ideas to mainstream audiences.

As Tucker Carlson’s tenure at Fox News draws to a close, so does his reign as one of the most prolific promoters in modern American history.

Carlson, who on Monday achieved the dubious honor of being fired from all three big American news networks, has achieved success as an actor, activist, and partisan who manipulated and moved his audience in a way that only he could. That audience included presidents, ex-presidents, hate-watching liberals, average conservatives, and every Republican lawmaker under the sun.

He found success on Fox by going further than any of his predecessors beyond the boundaries of acceptability. Since its heyday, bigotry has unleashed, parroted white nationalist talking points, and promoted conspiracies and lies from behind the facade of investigative journalism.

Most of this inquiry was, of course, deep. His production seemed designed to annoy liberals rather than to expose any great truth, and it was more important to him to annoy liberals because they disturbed him. Carlson is a man of such enormous privilege and ego that he has built an entire persona around refusing to correct or object in any way. He knowingly told lies and conspiracies to prove that he can say whatever he wants.
