Tottenham players give traveling fans money back after defeat by Newcastle United

Tottenham Hotspur players have pledged to refund match tickets to fans who traveled away from their humiliating defeat by Newcastle United on Sunday.

Tottenham were stunned by five goals in the first 21 minutes at St James’ Park in what should have been a devastating 6-1 loss in the Champions League qualification race.

Acting manager Christian Stellini paid for his job on Monday as the club moved to put Ryan Mason in charge of the team for the remainder of the season after Antonio Conte left the club by mutual consent last month.

Now players have moved to address the growing discontent within the fanbase with an official statement to the fans.

“As a team, we understand your frustration and anger,” they said on Tottenham’s official social media accounts on Tuesday.

We know that words are not enough in such situations but believe us, such a defeat is painful. We appreciate your support at home and abroad and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans for the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.

“We know that doesn’t change what happened on Sunday and we will do everything to make things right against Manchester United on Thursday night when, once again, your support will mean everything to us.

“Together – and only together – we can move things forward.”

Following the apology, Tottenham announced the formation of a fan advisory board to increase fan involvement and ensure fans were consulted during the decision-making process.

The club says the board – which will be made up of elected members – will provide “much more fan participation” and will have feedback from fans while making the club’s decision.

The club says the board’s remit will cover topics including its “strategic vision and objectives”, as well as match-day issues and stadium plans.

Tottenham ranks fifth in the English Premier League, six points behind Manchester United in fourth place, after playing two more matches.
