The late Queen Elizabeth II knew her second son’s interview with Newsnight was a disaster before he did, a new documentary claims.

TV presenter Emily Maitlis has revealed the Queen has received a copy of the Duke of York’s appearance on the BBC’s flagship news programme, where he was questioned about his relationship with pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Shortly afterwards, the duke – who was said to have been “delighted” after meeting him – was apparently tapped on the shoulder by his security guards and walked away.

Andrew came under intense scrutiny after his disastrous interview with BBC Newsnight in 2019 over allegations that Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre had been trafficked into having sex with the royal family when she was 17.

In a new Channel 4 two-part documentary, Andrew – The Trouble Prince, former BBC journalist Ms Maitlis says the interview’s negative effects “blew up” on the Queen “before it dawned on him”.

Giuffre’s attorney, Sigrid Irons, told the documentary that the Newsnight interview gave her client a “road map to tearing it down” in the civil lawsuit.

Despite a BBC interview that ultimately led to Andrew being stripped of his sponsorship and military affiliations, former Newsnight producer Sam McAllister claimed the royals were ‘thrilled’ afterward because he ‘thought it went really well’.

One of Prince Andrew’s friends, Irish libel lawyer Paul Tweed, told the documentary that he tried to persuade the duke not to give the interview, The Telegraph reported.

Maitlis revealed that she was “shocked” by some of the Duke’s responses, describing them as a “tidal wave of bad answers”.

‘That’s how I know Prince Andrew is happy with the interview because he kept talking,’ she said. He looked so funny.

A large number of people came over and I said, “What’s going on?” They said, “Well, on Thursday evenings we have movie night at the Palace. You can stay if you like.” And at that point, I’m just like, “I have to get out of here. I needed space to process what just happened.”

Maitlis went on to reveal how the Queen seemed to realize the seriousness of the situation before the Duke.

She said: ‘It was only on Saturday when the Queen was said to have read the full script that he was tapped on the shoulder by his security guards. And they said, “I think, sir, you may have to come with us.” After the Queen saw what the interview contained, she thought it dawned on her, before she dawned on him.

Following the BBC’s November 2019 broadcast and uproar over Andrew’s friendship with Epstein, the Duke stepped down from public life.

Last year, he reached an out-of-court settlement with Ms Giuffre reportedly worth up to US$12m (£9.6m) after a sex claim filed against him in the US.

He continues to deny any wrongdoing.

Epstein was found dead in his cell in a Manhattan federal prison in August 2019 while he awaited trial on a sex trafficking charge. His death was a suicide.

During the original Newsnight broadcast some four years ago, the Duke denied having had sex with Lady Giuffre, said he did not remember ever meeting her and that he had spent the day in question at a Pizza Express in Woking, Surrey, at a party with one of his daughters.

Giuffre said Andrew sweated profusely as they danced at Trump’s London nightclub in one alleged encounter.

The Duke told Metliss that his war service in the Falklands had caused a medical condition, at the time, which meant he didn’t sweat it.

The infamous Interview is also being adapted by Netflix, with Sex Education star Gillian Anderson playing Mrs. Maitlis and The Man In The High Castle actor Rufus Sewell as Andrew.

Ms McAllister revealed in the Channel 4 documentary that the Duke took his daughter, Princess Beatrice, with him to final negotiations with the BBC over what should be included in the interview.

During the negotiations, Ms. McAllister and Maitlis said Andrew asked “Should I tell you why I can’t sweat?” While seeking to explain why Joffrey’s allegations against him were untrue.

“I remember thinking: ‘Wow, you know, if he said that, then that’s it…’,” Ms. Maitlis said in the documentary.

Before moving forward with the interview, the presenter said Andrew told her he had to “get approval from above”.

Of course, she said, he is talking about the Queen.

During the documentary, the former BBC journalist said Newsnight had refused an interview with Andrew three times due to his team’s attempt to impose editorial restrictions on them.

“Epstein was a red line and we didn’t have to ask if we had the interview,” Ms McAllister said of one of her initial negotiations with the Duke’s chief of staff.

Commenting on Newsnight’s earlier decision not to proceed with an interview after Epstein’s restrictions were imposed, Ms Maitlis said: ‘Thank God we dropped the whole thing.

Producer Miss McAlister said the Duke announced he had brought someone with him to the negotiations, and she said she thought he meant a lawyer.

She told the documentary: ‘Instead his daughter Princess Beatrice comes around the corner. That was really one of the curveballs.

Miss McAllister had previously described how Beatrice took notes on a clipboard at the meeting and looked “worried”.

The princess is set to appear in the new Netflix drama that details preparation for a Newsnight interview given by the Duke of York, The Telegraph reports.

Actress Charity Wakefield will play Beatrice in Scoop, which also stars Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis, Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew and Billie Piper as the BBC produces Sam McAllister.

The film follows Sam McAllister, who manages to land a surprise interview about Prince Andrews with Jeffrey Epstein that is widely believed to have backfired.
