Earthquake swarms rattle in Southern California

A swarm of earthquakes struck the Salton Sea region of southern California and the US-Mexico border over the weekend, with seismic activity reaching a magnitude of 4.5, as reported by The Sacramento Bee.

USGS data shows that the first quake occurred around 12:08 p.m. local time Saturday in Heber near the US-Mexico border, about 60 miles south of the Salton Sea, with a magnitude of 4.1. Dozens of tremors have been reported after the initial shock.

USGS data showed that a 4.5-magnitude earthquake hit Sunday morning four miles west-southwest of Neyland and east of the Salton Sea. Dozens of earthquakes have also been reported.

According to the USGS intensity map, the earthquakes were felt in the Palm Desert, Indio, El Centro, and Mexicali.

Last month, a series of earthquakes rocked Pacifica in Northern California. Earlier this year, Los Angeles was hit by an earthquake, and Humboldt County was hit in December.

For the state’s southern region, it remains to be seen if these swarms indicate the potential for larger earthquakes.
