Russia’s Veronika Kudrmitova said she would remove the emblem of Russian sponsor Tatneft from her kit so she could compete at Wimbledon this year.
Wimbledon banned Russian and Belarusian players in 2022 over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine but said in March it would accept them as neutral players at this year’s tournament.
Tournament organizers said players would be prohibited from expressing support for the invasion, which Moscow calls a “special military operation”, and should not receive funding from Russian or Belarusian states.
The European Union imposed sanctions on Tatneft, an oil and gas company that sponsors Kudmitova, last June.
“I think for Wimbledon it is not allowed to play with the Russian badge. I know that,” Kudermetova told reporters at the Madrid Open on Monday.
Kudermitova, who will face Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals in Madrid, is among several Russia and Belarus players who have already signed personal statements that would clear them from competing as a neutral player at Wimbledon.
She added, “If I want to play Wimbledon, I need to remove the badge.”
