People in Uttarakhand are used to experiencing frequent mild earthquakes. In March, the mountainous state, known for its natural beauty, experienced three earthquakes within 12 hours. Three consecutive earthquakes were felt by people in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand.

Scientists believe that other than mild earthquakes, hilly condition is also at risk of experiencing massive earthquake. The warning came in February of this month and also included the Joshimath region, which continued to sink.

“Uttarakhand is located in a seismic gap where a great earthquake is waiting to happen,” Dr Purnachandra Rao, Senior Scientist, Seismologist, NGRI told Deccan Herald.

A large earthquake with a magnitude greater than 8.0 on the Richter scale could cause serious damage to the state, which is also struggling with subsidence events in some of its parts. Rampant construction, deforestation, and landslides are also a major concern in the state, carrying the potential for an exacerbation of the situation resulting from the earthquake of high intensity.
