Black Lives Matter and Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have joined the chorus of voices calling out for the ex-Marine who was seen putting Jordan Neely in a chokehold before he died to be held accountable.
Neely’s death in the New York subway was ruled a homicide after a 30-year-old homeless man was filmed being put into a chokehold after behaving erratically, appearing to be frustrated about his personal situation.
The killing verdict does not determine intent or blame.
The Mayor of New York, Eric Adams, was criticized for his failure to reprimand after Neely’s death, including from Mrs. Ocasio-Cortez, who criticized Mr. Adams for his “inability to publicly condemn a murder.”
Video of the incident, filmed by journalist Juan Alberto Vazquez, shows Nellie shouting and throwing his jacket to the ground.
The passenger, whose name police did not release, pinned Neely to the ground in a chokehold for about 15 minutes, leaving him unconscious, according to the New York Post.
New York State Senator Julia Salazar called Neely’s death a “lynching”.

THE VOICES: New York Wasn’t a “Safe City” by Jordan Neely
“We’re making our city safer,” New York Mayor Eric Adams boasted at the end of 2022. Adams has made policing a central talking point of his administration, and has consistently claimed that he’s turning New York City into a safer city.
After the events of this week, it is clear that we need to ask, “Whose City is Safer?” On Monday, a homeless black man with a history of mental illness, Jordan Neely, was yelling at commuters on the New York subway. Witnesses said he did not physically assault or harm anyone. But a hitherto unnamed 24-year-old ex-Marine decides that Neely needs to be defeated. He put it in a chokehold, and as bystanders watched, Nellie choked to death.
New York was not safe for Jordan Neely. Democratic State Senator Julia Salazar compared his horrific killing to a lynching — the public extermination of a marginalized black person in the name of restoring public order.

“It had a huge impact on him. He got depressed and it grew and became more serious. He was suffering from schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder. The doctors knew his condition and he needed treatment for that.
“The whole system let him down. He fell through the cracks of the system.”

Nellie’s father speaks

1683221450 New York City officials are getting carried away in their reactions to Neely’s death
Officials in New York began to drift apart when they responded to the news of Neely’s death.
City Comptroller Brad Lander tweeted on Tuesday that “New York City is not Gotham City. We must not turn into a city where a mentally ill person can be choked to death by a vigilante without consequence. Or where a murderer is justified and cheered.”
“Jordan Neely was murdered. But bc Jordan was homeless and crying for food at a time when the city was raising rents and stripping services in order to militarize itself while many in power demonize the poor, protect the killer with negative headlines + don’t matter,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez chirp. “It’s disgusting.”
Mayor Eric Adams appeared on CNN, criticizing other elected officials for appearing to advance Manhattan da Alvin Bragg.
“I don’t think that’s very responsible at a time when we’re still investigating the situation. Let’s let the DA run its investigation with law enforcement officials,” said the mayor. “Getting involved with that is not the right thing to do.”

1683219650 From Michael Jackson impersonator to grisly death: Who was the homeless man murdered in the New York City subway?
Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man, was killed on a New York City subway train Monday afternoon after apparently suffering a mental health episode, prompting a fellow passenger to push him to the ground with the help of two others, holding him in a chokehold. .
The horrific incident was recorded on phone video at the scene, sparking a debate among New Yorkers about the rights and wrongs of the guard’s actions and the extent to which Neely’s behavior could be interpreted as a threat to the safety of fellow passengers.
Eyewitness Juan Alberto Vasquez, a freelance journalist, told the New York Post exactly what happened after Nellie boarded the northbound F train at the Second Avenue station.
“He starts making a speech. He starts shouting in an aggressive way,” said Mr. Vazquez.
“He said he had no food, no drink, that he was tired and he didn’t care if he went to jail. He started shouting all these things, and he took off his jacket, the black jacket he was wearing, and threw it on the ground.”
