Brighton ranks sixth in the English Premier League after beating Manchester United 1-0, and the only goal came from a penalty kick in the ninth minute of stoppage time. Luke Shaw, who missed the penalty kick, criticized his soft decision in preparation.

Luke Shaw slammed the decision to award Brighton a free kick in a 99th-minute build-up against Manchester United on Thursday.

With the score level at 0-0, Shaw appeared to prevent Julio Enciso from running into a flick outside the penalty area, and the referee ruled a foul against the England left-back.

The free kick led to a corner which cleared Shaw’s raised hand inside the penalty area. After being checked by the VAR, Alexis McAllister duly took and blocked the penalty kick.

It was a classy penalty that he crossed his body into the side-netting, scoring the last ever goal against the Red Devils.

The result means United are still picking up just one point from their eight matches against the Premier League’s best nine.

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Brighton on Thursday night after a 99th minute penalty. Luke Shaw (second left) missed the spot kick after the VAR detected a handball inside the area. Alexis McAllister (pictured) converted from the penalty spot to put Seagulls are in sixth place in the net. league

Shaw felt the free kick should not have been awarded, telling Sky Sports: ‘Before the corner the free kick was never a foul. I’m not looking for excuses, but what should have been a mistake resulted in a corner. So maybe that angle shouldn’t have happened.

United boss Erik ten Hag agreed with his full-back, stating: “There were a lot of bad tackles tonight, but this one, a fair block, he received the whistle.”

But Paul Ince downplayed their complaints, because he felt you had to ‘handle the angle, foul or not.

He added, “It’s the last minute, you need concentration and focus, and then you get a point.” You came away and you have to dig, but today you see Anthony frowning, you have to move on. I didn’t see that from United today.

Jamie Redknapp added that Ten Hag’s side “didn’t do enough” against Brighton, and that the manager “has to work on” their away form.

Despite his complaints about the referee, the impetuous Shaw admitted his late mistake had cost United a point. “I appreciate it, I’m dealing with my chin, it cost us the game but it’s tough,” he said. I can’t even explain why my hand is in there, a silly mistake that cost us a point. It’s quite disappointing and you lost us a point in the end.

The full-back also felt his side’s finishing was partly responsible for the loss, adding: “The problem is we don’t score. We had three or four great chances in the first half that we should have scored. It happens often this season.”

And he added, “It was due to my mistake at the end, but with the chances that we had, we should have scored. The match is completely different if we scored it with the chances that we create.”

Despite his late foul, Shaw blamed United’s defeat on a wayward finish earlier in the game, Union’s Erik ten Hag feeling a building handball free kick should not have been given.

His manager agreed, insisting his team had to be “more stamina”.

Despite the loss, United are still in a good position to finish in the Champions League places with a four-point lead over fifth-placed Liverpool with a game in hand.

They also face a relatively straightforward encounter, with the last five games of the season coming against West Ham, Wolves, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham.

As for Brighton, the victory made them four points clear of coach Jurgen Klopp’s team with two matches postponed, which means that they have an excellent opportunity to secure European football for the first time in their history.

He will enter the next match against relegation-threatened Everton on Monday.
