Part of Bath city center has been cordoned off amid a police murder investigation following the death of a man earlier in the day.
Southgate Street and James Street West were closed this morning, disrupting public transport in the city, with the public told to avoid the area.
Launch of the murder investigation – 4 p.m
Three people have been arrested following the death of a man in Bath this morning (Saturday 6 May).
Emergency services were called to the Southgate Street area in the city center just before 3.30am after reports of a man with serious injuries.
He died at the scene and his relatives have been notified.
Avon and Somerset Police said official identification and an autopsy would take place in due course and that officers had made three arrests.
Chief Inspector Ronnie Longo said: “First and foremost, our thoughts go out to the family of the man who died at this incredibly difficult and upsetting time.
“A murder investigation is underway, and we ask that the benefit of our investigation, but most importantly the welfare of the man’s family, be that people avoid speculating about possible circumstances while this is going on.
Three people were arrested this morning on suspicion of murder and are in detention.”
Ch Insp Longo added: “While such tragic incidents are rare in Bath, people can expect an increased police presence in the area over the coming days as investigative inquiries and officer patrols are conducted.
“We encourage anyone with concerns to speak with these officers who are happy to help.
“There is still a scene in place at this time. We appreciate that it will cause some disruption to the public and businesses today, but we would like to ask for understanding while officers do the important work of determining what happened.
“Anyone who witnessed the accident, has footage of the surrounding area or has information that may assist our investigation, is requested to call 101 and quote reference number 5223105088.”
