Sky News understands that the Duke of Sussex, who had no official role in the event, quickly left Westminster Abbey after his father’s coronation on Saturday, in an attempt to catch a flight home to Los Angeles for his son’s birthday celebrations.

Prince Harry was not invited to appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after his father’s coronation, Sky News understands.

On Saturday, the palace confirmed that it would have no “official role” in the king’s coronation.

Understandably, the prince’s representatives are today trying to clarify exactly what that means — he wasn’t invited to be there with working members of the royal family.

However, the Queen’s sister and lady attendant, who are also non-working members of the royal family, were on the balcony for the historic moment.

The Duke of Sussex hastily left Westminster Abbey after his coronation ceremony to take his flight back to Los Angeles.

His son, Prince Archie, turned four on Saturday and spent the day with his mother, the Duchess of Sussex, at their home in the United States.

British Airways flight attendants confirmed to the PA news agency that Prince Harry was on the flight but said they were not allowed to discuss the details of his flight.

Harry’s appearance at the coronation ceremony was his first publicly alongside the royal family since he made allegations about his family in his controversial memoir Spear.

He was seated in the third row for the monarch’s coronation alongside Prince Andrew, who has stepped away from public life after a disastrous Newsnight interview in November 2019 in which he discussed his friendship with pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Harry and Andrew are seated two rows behind Prince William.
