The Metropolitan Police have defended their officers after a suspect was shot and two dogs were shot in front of screaming witnesses.

Footage posted on social media showed officers pursuing a man holding the two dogs down a short path along a canal in Limehouse, east London, on Sunday afternoon.

Then the situation seemed to get heated, as the man was tasered to the ground and the animals were shot dead.

Commenting on the incident, the police said that officers “have a duty to act as necessary before any further injury occurs.”

In a statement, the force said: “Police were called shortly after 5pm on Sunday 7 May to a woman who had been attacked by a dog on the E14 commercial road.

“Officers attended where the aggressive behavior of the two dogs was a major concern and posed a significant threat to them.

“A man has been arrested in connection with the incident for dangerously driving a dog out of control and offenses of assault. He has been taken into police custody. Police have pulled Taser.”

The statement continued: “No one was taken to hospital, and the police destroyed dogs at the scene.

“This is never an easy decision for any officer to make, but it is the duty of the police to act as necessary before any further injury occurs.

The Met’s Occupational Standards Directorate will review the circumstances of the incident.
