ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been arrested during his court appearance in the capital, Islamabad, over allegations of corruption.

Musarat Jamshed Cheema, leader of Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party, confirmed Khan’s arrest to Al Jazeera on Tuesday.

“He went for his biometrics from where he was picked up by the Rangers,” she said, referring to the paramilitaries.

Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, a senior police official in Islamabad, said Al Jazeera Khan was arrested in a case related to a Qadir Trust.

He said the National Accountability Board (NAB) issued an arrest warrant for Khan on May 1 in connection with the case.

Fawad Chowdhury, of Khan’s PTI party, said on Twitter that the Islamabad High Court complex had been “occupied” by Pakistan’s Rangers paramilitary group and that lawyers were being “tortured”.

Video footage broadcast by local media showed Khan escorting him to a Rangers car and taking him to an unknown location.

The agency said in a tweet on Twitter that the Rangers had “kidnapped” Khan.

“The brave people of Pakistan must come out and defend their homeland,” the party wrote.

Reports said Aamir Farooq, Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, had ordered government officials to appear in court over Khan’s arrest.

Khan, 70, was ousted from power in April last year after losing a vote of confidence in parliament. Since then, he has been campaigning for snap national elections, which are due in October this year.
