(BDN) – An earthquake struck the Middle East near Eastport early Monday morning.
The magnitude 2 earthquake struck around 4:15 a.m. about 9 miles northeast of Eastport at a depth of about 5 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.
This places the earthquake over the US-Canada border near the mouth of Pasamakodi Bay. There were no immediate reports on the extent of the damage.
Since 1997, more than 150 earthquakes have been recorded in the state, according to the agency.
The most powerful earthquake in recent memory occurred on Oct. 16, 2012, when a 4.5-magnitude quake shook the ground in East Waterboro, according to the Maine Geological Survey. But Maine felt the impact of much larger earthquakes that hit as far away as Plattsburgh, New York and Quebec City.
About 900,000 earthquakes of less than 2.5 magnitude are felt each year around the world, according to Michigan Technological University.
