Blizzards, heavy rain and thunder battered parts of England as meteorologists issued a yellow weather warning.
The Met Office alert covered southern England, East Anglia and parts of the Midlands – with a radar image showing a band of heavy rain stretching across the country on Tuesday.
George Dibley, from Basingstoke in Hampshire, said the rain “was crazy to see and hear” and that it felt as if someone was knocking on his window.
“We were worried at one point that if it got colder it could damage our car, but fortunately it only lasted a few minutes,” he said.
Basingstoke resident Sam Middleton Bray posted pictures and videos of large hailstones falling in her garden.
“This was crazy weather today here in Basingstoke. I’ve never seen hail this big,” she wrote on Twitter.
The weather observer was also rocked by the lightning and a powerful clap of thunder as he filmed under a storm in Warwickshire, saying it was “the closest I’ve ever seen”.
Heavy rains also caused flooding in some areas, with Devon and Somerset fire and rescue services saying they had received calls from people stuck in the water.
At Bathialton in Somerset, Val Coates said her garden had been flooded by a creek – as it often happens – but Tuesday’s deluge was “on a different scale, though really incredible”.
“The creek rose about a foot above garden level and whole sections of both sides were completely flooded,” she said.
Also in Somerset, sixteen-year-old Eleanor Weeks was almost stranded when a bridge at Broughton submerged.

“It was very shocking because it had been raining for three solid hours and we had to try to find a way around it with a footbridge that was flooded,” she said.
“Our car was on the other side, so we had to go along a flooded footpath bridge and through another flood to get to the car.”

The weather warning ended at 10 p.m. and meteorologists said precipitation would gradually decrease overnight.
These are “energetic conditions in the south and east,” said Claire Nasir, a meteorologist with the Met Office, and that the risk of rain and hail will continue through Wednesday and Thursday.
There could be some heavy rain on Friday in the south, she said, but elsewhere it will be mostly dry.
