Defense sources have told the Telegraph that the Storm Shadow, the RAF’s long-range cruise missile, will be supplied to Ukraine as the country continues to build up its forces ahead of the expected counter-attack, reports Dominic Nicholls.
Britain’s Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, is due to make a statement to Parliament at midday in which he is expected to confirm the news.
No details were revealed about the numbers to be awarded, dates of arrival or even if the missiles are actually in Ukraine.
There has been speculation for months that Britain was supplying the Storm Shadow, a satellite-guided missile with a range of about 150 miles and carrying a 450kg warhead.
Ukraine has been requesting long-range precision munitions for months, as a way to strike Russian command posts, ammunition and logistical depots and key pieces of battlefield equipment such as air defence.
The United States has resisted pressure from Kiev to send the Army’s Long-Range Surface-to-Surface Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), presumably over concerns it could be used to strike targets inside Russia; An action considered extremely sensitive and escalating, given the poor performance of the Russian forces since the start of the all-out war in February 2022.
It is not known whether the action by the United Kingdom – which was similarly the first to pledge Western tanks – would open up similar offers from the Allies.
