Everton could provide the strongest test of Manchester City’s treble credentials

Should he complete his rescue, I’m sure many will look back on Monday and say that was the night Daiki won the confidence of fans who began to question whether he was the right manager for the current circumstances after all. Make no mistake, the hum started with questions about team selection and defensive weaknesses.

For 90 minutes at Amex Stadium, a weight was lifted and the gray skies above Goodison Park cleared. At the very least, it looks like Everton won’t go down without a fight. This was the minimum expected when Dyche took over.

The mood is quite different getting ready for Sunday, as the intensity rises to another level for this weekend’s visitors.

On the pitch, Everton and City no longer have much common ground. Aside from staying in the Premier League, Everton’s only consolation in another terrible season is that Haaland is unlikely to break Dixie Dean’s single-season goalscoring record.

Whatever happens against City, Everton will have other chances to save themselves against Wolverhampton and Bournemouth.

But I doubt Guardiola’s side will have to do their best all season to get three points.

An Everton win guarantees Dyche the chance to lead the club towards a brighter future.

If City win, there is no belief that they can win the treble. It becomes an expectation that they will.
