Todd Green of Chico State corrects fault zone confirmation after the earthquake – Chico Enterprise Record

Chico — Professor Todd Green, chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Chico State University, said Tuesday that he made a mistake and wants to correct it.

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Lake Almoner area of Plumas County at 4:19 p.m. May 10th. During an interview on Friday, May 11, Green said there are two rift zones near and under Lake Almoner — but neither of them have been active “in the past 15,000 years.”

However, Green researched the matter over the following days and determined that there had indeed been activity on the bug.

“I did some digging and it turns out that there is an older reference – 1995 – that actually shows active faults going through Lake Almoner,” said the professor. “The US Geological Survey website I was using before has not been updated to show this. In other words, these recent earthquakes occurred along known active faults.

“I’m not sure why the USGS website hasn’t been updated,” he said.

He referred to a book titled Quaternary Geology Along the Boundary Between the Modoc Plateau and the Southern Cascade Mountains and Northern Sierra Nevada by Ice Age Friends. The book resulted from a 1995 Pacific Cell field trip, with Bill Page as the flight commander and Jeff Unruh creating the map and conducting the discussion.

The May 10 earthquake caused 28 aftershocks in and around Lake Almoner, including a 5.2-magnitude earthquake at 3:18 a.m. the next morning. But things calmed down after the series, with five very small aftershocks starting Sunday, according to the USGS website. The sixth rocket, which occurred early Tuesday morning, measured 3.1 on the Richter scale.
