est Ham’s progression in the Europa Conference League final was marred by horrific scenes in Alkmaar as sections of the travel support were attacked by full-time home fans.

An injury-time Pablo Fornals goal sealed the Irons’ 1–0 victory that night and a 3–1 aggregate victory, which saw the club reach its first major European final since 1976.

The Uefa protocol means that traveling teams are granted corporate ticket allocation inside the home stand at matches, rather than at the main away end.

A similar arrangement at the London Stadium last week led to a verbal confrontation between West Ham fans, AZ Alkmaar staff and the players’ families, but here the situation has escalated horribly.

At the full-time whistle, having watched the West Ham entourage celebrate the late goal, a group of hardcore fans from the far end of the field raced around the edge of the pitch to attack the visiting fans.

West Ham players rushed into the situation, with several of their family members evidently caught up in the fray, while local police seemed slow to intervene.
