Day two of the US PGA Championship will see the field cut in half as the title contenders look to move into position before the weekend. Rory McIlroy battled illness and a poor start to stay in contention as Bryson Dechambeau set up the club’s target on day one at Oak Hill.

In a tournament that has drawn comparisons to Winged Foot, the venue of his 2020 US Open victory, the lanky DeChambeau still has enough power to post six birdies and two bogeys in the opening 66 on Thursday.

That gave DeChambeau a one-two lead over world No. 2 Scotty Scheffler, Dustin Johnson and Corey Connors, with Victor Hovland, Ryan Fox and Keegan Bradley a close second. Unheralded Eric Cole held the lead overnight at -5, although he only completed 14 holes and was soon surprised by his first hole on his return Friday morning.

McIlroy fought back from three-par after nine holes to come back 71, while Masters champion and world No. 1 John Rahm surprisingly pulled back to six over 76.

Tom Kim has admitted he missed the anonymity of playing in tournaments without widespread television coverage after an embarrassing incident in Oak Hill.

Kim inadvertently delivered the viral moment of the first day of the U.S. PGA Championship with a glancing putt on the tee on the sixth of four, the 15th of the day.

The world number 19 thought he could play the ball on edge but found the ground was much softer and muddier than expected.

Television footage depicted Kim’s back and legs covered in mud and he continued rolling as he decided he might as well find a cleaner part of the creek in which to wash his legs and pants.

“I think the world has seen enough of that already,” Kim joked while showing off the footage while speaking to Sky Sports after a round of 73.

Good stuff from Max Homma. One of the top 10 players in the world has been a bit overlooked this week but has recovered well after a slow start. He makes a flip-ball in the 10th to start his second round and capitalizes on a birdie to follow in the 11th. He’s up to Evens for the championship now.

Thomas Peters makes a shot from downtown on the third to go to -2 – currently a tie for seventh. He’s joined there this morning by huge hitter Australian Cam Davis who makes three straight birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes to move up the leaderboard.

Give yourself a day, Michael Block! The PGA professional attacks the pins and looks like he belongs with the best players in the world here. This is the fifth time he has qualified for the PGA Championship as one of the 20 PGA Professionals but he has never been successful.

However, he flies the 14th (fifth) for third birdie of the day and is at -3, just one stroke off the lead. What a story!

Lots of big hitters (both literally and figuratively) head into their second innings, trying to climb the leaderboard or keep the good position they’ve built. We’ll keep you posted on how they progress.

The trio of Tommy Fleetwood (+2), Hideki Matsuyama (+2) and Cameron Young (+4) are currently on the second hole (11th), while Tony Finau (+1), Max Homma (+1) and Adam Scott (-2) hold the top spot tenth (first). Finau had the perfect start with a stunning approach that left him five feet to birdie, which he sinks to move to +1. He was +6 after nine holes on his first round, remember…

Tyrrell Hatton (+7), Dustin Johnson (-3) and Xander Schauffele (+2) are just starting 10th and behind them will be Patrick Cantlay (+4), Ricky Fowler (+3) and Phil Mickelson (+3). Some great golf is coming up.

The New York course is hosting the event for the fourth time, with a strong field preparing for battle over the course of four days.

Defending champion Justin Thomas is hoping to challenge again, but there will be a lot of focus on the world’s leading trio, with Masters winners Scheffler and Ram, in particularly stellar form in 2023.

But Oak Hill has produced a surprise major winner before, and an unlikely contender can pull off a talented and deep roster of entrants.

Here are the tee times and group highlights for the 2023 PGA Championship.

PGA professional Michael Block flies into his second round start. 20 PGA professionals qualify for the PGA Championship each year and this is Block’s fifth appearance in the tournament. He’s not your average teaching professional and he’s showing his class.

He birdied the 10th (his first) and then stuck an approach around the flag on the 12th for a birdie kick. Two under for the round and -2 for the championship, he’s on track to make the cut that will certainly be his goal.

Eric Cole had a chance to get a shot after his double bogey disaster, but the racket went cold after a fine iron shot in the 7th minute was not taken advantage of.

In terms of other first round standouts, Justin Rose retook his form from the green on the 18th to score a one-under run of 69. Good stuff by the Englishman. But Phil Mickelson’s usually unbelievable putt let him down on the final hole, as he lingered a rough ground and drilled two touchdowns to +3 with a 73. Gutting for Lefty

Nice end to his first round of Mito Pereira. He looked poised to win that championship last year, leading at 18 on Sunday, but collapsed to allow Justin Thomas to sneak in and get the glory.

Pereira signs on as a two-over-72 and will be back there in just under an hour for his second round
