Waves may reach the Pacific islands of Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna.

Sydney:

The US Geological Survey said that a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred, Saturday, in the Pacific Ocean, east of New Caledonia, a day after a strong earthquake occurred in the same area.

It added that the epicenter of the quake was at a depth of 35 km and located 300 km east of the archipelago of New Caledonia.

Any tsunami waves less than 0.3 meters (one foot) are expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in its latest update.

It added that the waves may reach the islands of Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna in the Pacific Ocean, after earlier issuing a warning for coasts located 300 kilometers (185 miles) from the epicenter.

And on Friday, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in the same area prompted people to seek higher ground on several islands in the Pacific Ocean for fear of giant waves. The warning of a tsunami was lifted hours later.
