(Reuters) – An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands in the French territory of New Caledonia on Saturday, without any danger of a tsunami, authorities said.
The USGS, which reported several aftershocks in the area after the 7.1-magnitude quake, said the quake struck at a depth of about 36 kilometers (22.37 miles).
Following the earthquake, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said there was no risk of a tsunami for mainland Australia, islands and territories.
And on Friday, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami risk across the South Pacific that later passed.
