An initial 5.5-magnitude earthquake occurred near the coast of Northern California on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake occurred at about 11:44 a.m. and had a depth of 10.0 km. West Petrolia in Humboldt County, the USGS said.

This is near the same area where a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Humboldt County in Northern California, in December 2022, killing two people and injuring about a dozen. It caused widespread damage.
A few days later on January 1 of this year, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck the region.
So far, there have been no reports of any major damage or injuries.
