Pro-Ukrainian fighters are believed to have used US-made armored vehicles in one of the largest incursions across the Russian border, according to photos and videos verified by The New York Times.
The report said that at least three US-made MRAPs (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles) were used in the attacks in Russia’s Belgorod region, and two of them were captured by Russian forces.
One civilian was killed following the attacks by two alleged anti-Kremlin armed groups that employ Russians abroad.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region, said they have begun evacuating nine Russian villages in the Belgorod region as the anti-terror operation continues in full force.
“Don’t go home yet,” he told local residents who were evacuated on Monday.
The US State Department denied that it would “encourage or enable strikes inside Russia” but said “it is up to Ukraine to decide how to conduct this war”.
Russia said its forces crushed the offensive, killing more than 70 “Ukrainian nationalists” and driving the rest into Ukraine.

It appears that anti-Russian fighters used US-made armored vehicles in the Belgorod Oblast raid, according to photos and videos verified by The New York Times.
At least three US-made vehicles were used with two of those captured by Russian forces.
The group behind the incursion that led to the Belgorod evacuations used MRAP vehicles known as the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, which were built by US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of which Washington has sent to Ukraine.
The two groups that have claimed responsibility for the incursion are the Russia Freedom Corps — a Ukraine-based Russian militia led by Russian dissident Ilya Ponomarev that says it operates inside Russia to overthrow Vladimir Putin — and the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC). .
One of the captured MRAP photos showed a Russian soldier standing next to a vehicle with a white spray-painted sign of an upward-pointing arrow. A car with a similar symbol was seen in a video just hours before the incursion into Russia.

The mercenary warns Prigozhin that Russia may face revolution unless the elite get serious about war
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Wagner’s mercenary group, warned that Russia could face a revolution similar to the one in 1917 and lose the war in Ukraine unless the elite were serious about going to war.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered one of the bloodiest European conflicts since World War II and the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
Prigozhin said Ukraine was preparing a counter-offensive aimed at returning Russian forces to the pre-2014 borders, when Russia annexed Crimea. He added that Ukraine would try to besiege Bakhmut and attack Crimea.
“Most likely, this scenario will not be good for Russia, so we need to prepare for an uphill war,” he said in an interview posted on his Telegram channel.
“We are in a situation where we can lose Russia – that’s the main problem… We need to impose martial law.”
Prigozhin said that his political outlook is dominated by love for the motherland and service to Putin. He said the title “Poutine’s Chef” is stupid because he can’t cook, quipping that “Poutine’s Butcher” might be a more appropriate title.
He said Russia’s elite are protecting their children from going to war while the children of ordinary Russians die at the front, a situation he said could lead to unrest in Russia.
He argued that if ordinary Russian citizens continued to put their children back in zinc coffins while the children of the elite dived abroad, Russia would face upheavals along the lines of the revolutions of 1917 that led to civil war.

Kiev denies a claim by the European Union’s Josef Borrell that Ukrainian pilots are training on F-16s.
The Ukrainian Air Force denied statements by the head of European Union diplomacy, Josep Borrell, that its pilots are training on US-made F-16s in several European countries.
Air force spokesman Yuriy Ehnat said preparations for the training program were “still underway,” according to the Kyiv Independent, adding that Ukrainian representatives have been sent to the countries offering the training to “study how the process will go.”
“For a long time, unfortunately, I had to refute (the claims) that ‘pilots study in the United States, (and) Europe,'” Ehnat said in a televised interview on May 23. “There is no need to give any further hope.”

The Kremlin says Russia will achieve the goals of its operations in Ukraine by any means
Kremlin spokesmen said Russia denied the possibility of freezing the Ukraine conflict, saying it would continue to achieve its goals through a special military operation or other available means.
“Russia takes into account only the completion of its own military operation: ensuring its interests, achieving Russia’s goals either through a special military operation, or through other available means,” Dmitry Peskov told TASS.
Regarding reconciliation plans put forward by other countries, he said: “It is too early to talk about it. It is clear that there are no preconditions for the peace process yet.”
He added that negotiations “are hardly possible, because any negotiations with Russia are prohibited [in Ukraine]”.

Russia says its military incursion into Ukraine “crushed”
Russia said it had crushed one of Ukraine’s largest incursions, including several armored vehicles, into its border region.
In what appears to be one of the largest incursions from Ukraine since the war began 15 months ago, two alleged anti-Kremlin armed groups that employ Russians abroad said they were responsible for the attack in Russia’s Belgorod region.
Blaming the Ukrainian authorities, Russia’s defense ministry said its forces had surrounded enemy fighters and defeated them “with air strikes, artillery fire and active work of border units”.
The ministry said that “the remnants of the nationalists were returned to Ukrainian territory, where they continued to be shot until they were completely eliminated.”
The governor of the Belgorod region said a civilian was killed “by the Armed Forces of Ukraine”.
