A 6.2-magnitude earthquake shakes the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory after an earthquake occurred near the Banda Sea on Thursday morning

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Northern Territory.

Residents in Darwin said the ground was starting to shake and the apartments were swaying when the tremors started on Thursday at around 1:30 am.

Geoscience Australia said about 500 local residents in the capital and Palmerston felt the shaking. It was also felt as far as Katherine, 300 km south of Darwin.

There were no reports of major damage or injuries.

The earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea between East Timor and Indonesia.

The Australian Joint Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami.

A local resident said the tremors were about the same magnitude as what she experienced in New Zealand.

“Wow! That earthquake was as big as some in New Zealand. Didn’t expect it to shake awake in Darwin,” she said on Twitter.

Another joked, “Rise and shine again Darwin. Woke up to what can only be assumed to be tremors from an earthquake. This or my building should be examined.”

A third added, “A big roar in the distance, too.”

Another described that their apartment was shaking due to the earthquakes.

This is not the first time Darwin has been hit by an earthquake this year.

The earthquake, which had a magnitude of about ten kilometers, struck between Australia and western West Guinea on February 18.

A larger 7.6-magnitude quake was felt by residents of Northern Tritorion when it struck near Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands, at a depth of about 90 kilometers, on January 10.

Darwin often feels earthquakes as Australia’s neighbor to Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire, the most seismically and volcanically active region in the world.
