There will be no drama on Liverpool’s final day of the season as they can now finish no higher or lower than fifth after Man United’s result on Thursday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men found their groove at the end of the season thanks to a system change that led to a 10-match unbeaten run.

But their draw with Aston Villa eased the pressure on Newcastle and Man United in the race for the top four and they are now out of the Reds after midweek results.

Erik ten Hag’s side needed just one point against Chelsea to round out the top four, and their 4-1 victory ensured they were out of reach for Liverpool with one game remaining.

The Reds travel to Southampton knowing that their fifth-place finish has been confirmed, while the hosts themselves know that the championship awaits them next season with a 20th-place finish.

Liverpool could finish the season on 69 points with a win, equaling their tally in 2020/21 – which would have been enough to finish in third place.

This is the first time in seven seasons that the Reds are not competing in the Champions League, something that will need to be fixed next season.

Liverpool and Brighton – after their draw with Man City – have been confirmed for next season’s Europa League.

Klopp was quick to concede that the Champions League absence cannot extend beyond one season, but he does not expect repercussions in the next transfer window as players know what to expect.

“We’re still Liverpool, we’re really attractive to a lot of players, we shouldn’t forget that, and that’s why I’m not worried about that fact,” Klopp said.

“Of course, everything is more difficult without the Champions League, especially in the long run, so we shouldn’t do that too often, but apart from that it’s absolutely fine from a talking point of view and a persuasive point of view.”
