Nigel Farage says net migration could have fallen to 50,000 if he had been responsible

Nigel Farage has claimed that net immigration could have been limited to 50,000 a year if the Tories had taken the right approach after the UK left the EU.

The former leader of the Brexit Party accused the government of “ignoring the will of the people” after net immigration hit a new record.

Official data released yesterday by the Office for National Statistics showed net migration reached 606,000 last year, nearly three times the pre-Brexit average of between 200,000 and 250,000.

Farage told that before the EU referendum he had proposed cutting net immigration to 50,000, he told Sky News: “Yes, of course. Of course we could. We could have brought it down to 50,000. If they put me in charge. We’d have 50,000 of it a year.” No doubt about it, but they didn’t.

“The problem we have now is… I said 10 years ago, I wanted to cause an earthquake in British politics. Well, we got the earthquake, we still have the aftershocks, we suffer the aftershocks… Parliament and the government ignored the will of the people.

“They ignored what was said in that Brexit referendum, so now a bigger question arises of how to change politics in this country.”

Rishi Sunak said yesterday that the numbers are “very high” and he remains committed to bringing them down. He denied that net migration was out of control.
