The broadcaster announced that a tribute was being paid to Emily Morgan, health and science editor for ITV News, who died at the age of 45.

Morgan, whose career with the channel spanned more than two decades, was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away Friday night surrounded by her family.

The journalist, who has played a pivotal role in ITV News’ coverage of the Covid pandemic, has been described by colleagues as a “brilliant journalist” and a “wonderful woman”.

Chris Ship, the channel’s royal editor, wrote on Twitter: “She was a lovely person and a dear friend. As the health editor, Emily has been unafraid to report on Covid for the nation in 2020.

“Talented, kind, full of humanity. She was 45 years old.”

ITV news presenter Lucrezia Melarini said: “What a privilege to know, laugh with and work with such a wonderful woman. I am so sorry she is gone.

Our newsroom and programming will never be the same.

“Every bit of love goes to Emily’s family. I can’t imagine losing them now.”

Morgan started with ITV News as a producer and was based in Westminster for five years.

She later became a news reporter and progressed to several roles including Wales and West England Correspondent, Political Correspondent, and Health Editor. She was recently promoted to Health and Science Editor.

ITV Network News editor Andrew Dagnell said the broadcaster was deeply saddened by the death of such a “fantastic colleague”.

He added: “Her reporting has been instrumental in exposing the enormous pressure and stress NHS workers were under, and she has become a trusted voice for the public during an unprecedented period.

“Emily’s passion for the role was evident in everything she did and her work was a constant reminder of the importance of journalism. Her dedication to informing and educating our viewers will continue to inspire all those who have had the privilege of working with her.

Our thoughts are with Emily’s family. Emily was proud to be a journalist, but even prouder of her family. She adored them. We send them our love and support at this unimaginably difficult time.

“Emily was an exceptional journalist, a devoted mother and wife, and a true pioneer in our field. Her friendship, professionalism, and enormous contribution to our industry and to public conversations will not be forgotten.”

After announcing the news of her death on Saturday, NHS England paid tribute to the reporter, writing on Twitter: “Everyone at NHS England is so sad to hear this terrible news.

Emily was an amazing journalist whose coverage of Covid in particular was exceptional. We will miss her terribly and our thoughts will be with her colleagues, friends and most of all with her family.”
