In Collingwood, vibrations rattled buildings and tall buildings shook amid crackling sounds.
Wi-Fi systems are down, and some car alarms are going off.
According to local media reports, it has begun flowing off sloping roads and building cracks across multiple suburbs. There were no reports of personal injuries.
Many reported being surprised by how loud and strong the tremors were, and some said it felt much stronger than the 3.8 recorded.
The tremors followed an earthquake on May 16 in the southeastern suburbs.
