A near-perfect goodbye for Kendall, Shiv, and Roman

In the end, there was no joy for the Roys. The backstabbed siblings have emerged from succession just as they entered four seasons ago: fragile and fragile fractures, fueled by entitlement and consumed by father-spiritual issues.

Kendall, Schiff, and Roman go to the concluding series of Jesse Armstrong’s boardroom films, desperate to stop feared tech tycoon Lucas Mattson from walking away from the family’s silver lining. But stay away from Waystar Royco which he did in the epic final episode that revisited all of Succession’s strengths and some of its weaknesses. This wasn’t one of those finales that drags the rug away and leaves you speechless. Instead, Section played hits with a fervor that sometimes reached hysterics.

Betrayal has been the show’s recurring theme since the beginning. Until his death, Logan Roy repeatedly outsmarted his children by making them believe they would inherit his media empire – even though he knew in his heart that they weren’t up to the job. History repeated when Chef (Sarah Snook) enthroned heir apparent Kendall (Jeremy Strong) when Mattson’s deal went for a final board vote.

She had already been stabbed by Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård), who changed his mind about making her the corporate American persona — telling her estranged husband Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) that Chief was basically too much of a woman. Mattson didn’t want someone to know what they thought. He needed a servant – a part Tom was born to play.

If there’s a flaw with this final season, it’s that the Caliphate has been eating its own tail a bit. The show has several transition scenes: siblings rushing to phones to get over each other, Tom and Chief try to kiss and make up while secretly scheming, and Mattson glowering like the sociopathic Sun King. Those were the notes that show runner Armstrong hit again and again this year. Succession is masterful TV – but in the end, there was a feeling of seeing and hearing it all before.
