Ben Stokes announces after Bob Ollie’s double century

Ben Duckett would never have an easier chance of making a hundred in Test cricket, but does that tell us anything? Such a one-sided match, that it has become largely irrelevant to the first Ashes Test. At least it’s time in the middle.

In fairness, Duckett is taking his chance, unlike Crawley who made 56 and conceded it on Thursday night. The McCollum era reinvigorated Duckett’s career. The previous regime left him on this naughty step for a long time due to his perceived lack of professionalism and failure to docile.

This administration could care less about what happened in the past, and Duquette on his part has matured as well. Not led so easily, he settles off the field and is a devious character who seems to accept success and failure with the same attitude.

He thought his Test career was over, so he was determined to make the most of this opportunity. He admitted that he let him run out on the field when he played in Pakistan despite the greedy hundred here. He has a much better first-class record than Crawley (averaging 42) and is more compact defensively.

Ireland has given him plenty of breadth, and Australia, with more pace, will threaten the outside edge and bring a groove into play. This will be his challenge. At least he’ll have some confidence now, but nothing more than an idea of what awaits him.
