A 4.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Dominican Republic, and there is nothing to worry about

On Friday, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake occurred with its epicenter located 12.3 kilometers southwest of Maimon near Piedra Blanca in Monsignor Noel County. The National Seismological Center reported that the quake occurred at 11:36 am and was felt by people in parts of the national region.

The earthquake was at a depth of 104.3 km and its coordinates were at a latitude of 18.822 and a longitude of 70.349 km.

Geologist Osiris de Leon explained that the epicenter was at the bottom of the Yuna River within the fault zone of the Hatilo inrush. He reassured the public that this is a local mistake, not a regional one, stressing that there is no need for concern.

De Leon explained earlier that the Dominican Republic has 14 seismically active faults, but only two of them have the potential to cause devastating earthquakes. These two faults are the one on the Atlantic coast north of Puerto Plata and west of Montecristi, as well as the Enrique fault that runs south of Santo Domingo, Barahona, Doverje and Gemani.

He further explained that earthquakes that occur along internal faults are tremors that release energy and are part of normal seismic activity. Faults that do not extend beyond the island cause small tremors, while the Atlantic Coast and Enrique faults build up regional elastic energy, reaching into Mexico, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

In general, there is no significant cause for concern, and the recent quake is part of the normal earthquakes in the area.
