Philip Scofield said he dreaded leaving home amid the fallout from his secret affair with a much younger roommate.
In the former TV presenter’s first interview since quitting ITV and the morning broadcast programme, he said he was afraid of spitting in public.
“I don’t know a time when I’m going to be able to walk out the door,” Schofield told The Sun. “I have no soul. My friends tell me, ‘It will get better.’ You won’t. Not now. Not this.”
The former This Morning host, 61, said he was currently getting “hour by hour” and that he had “my girls and my friends.”
Taking responsibility for the backlash, he continued, “I deserve it. It’s my fault.”
However, he wondered where the public’s anger was coming from.
“Are they spitting on me because I had an affair at work and they lied about it?” Asked.

“Look there is a difference,” Scofield said, arguing that age gaps in reported heterosexual relationships involving Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio are “acceptable.”
He said, “It is not acceptable if he is in the gay world.”
Schofield said he and his former lover met when the man was 15 and in his mid-50s, but the affair did not begin until the man began working for ITV nearly four years later. Scofield denied “grooming” him.
Attorneys representing Schofield and the man corroborated these accounts.
At the time of the relationship, Scofield was with his wife, Stephanie Lowe, whom he married in 1993. He later came out as gay in 2020. The two have since divorced, but are still legally married.
The previously disgraced host said he “lost everything” after he admitted to the affair, and that the fallout had a “catastrophic effect” on his mental health.
British actor Rupert Everett recently defended Scofield, condemning the media for its “homophobic” coverage of the case.
“They should drop it,” Everett said.
