A 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Mornington Peninsula on Saturday — the third to hit the state in less than a week.

The Met Office says there is no danger of a tsunami on the coast of Australia as a result of the quake.

“Based on the magnitude and location of this earthquake, the JATWC (Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center) has assessed that there is no tsunami threat over the Australian mainland, island or areas from this earthquake,” the bureau said.

According to Australian Geosciences, the earthquake occurred just after midday.

Geoscience Australia reported that more than 100 people felt the event on the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston and as far away as Melbourne.

“This is strange. Yes, I felt another earthquake near Melbourne, this time on the Mornington Peninsula,” seismologist Adam Pascal wrote on Twitter.

“These events are unpredictable, but the stress distribution has changed recently, so be prepared for more activity.”

It is the third earthquake to hit and around Melbourne in less than a week.

On Tuesday, a magnitude 2.3 earthquake was reported to have hit Croydon.

“We’ve been aware of a small earthquake near Croydon in east Melbourne about half an hour ago,” Geoscience Australia said on Twitter at the time, describing it as “very small”.

On Sunday night, Melbourne was hit by an earthquake, which was reported to have a magnitude of 3.8.

However, it was later upgraded to a size 4.

Residents reported feeling the quake as far north as Albury on the Victoria-New South Wales border and as far south as Hobart.

In 2021, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake destroys buildings after it hits Mansfield in the Victorian Alps.

People felt this earthquake as far away as Launceston and Sydney.
