The Pope was admitted to the hospital for an operation on his intestines.

This comes a day after he underwent medical examinations in a hospital in Rome.

The Vatican said the operation would be carried out under general anesthesia on Wednesday afternoon and he would remain in hospital for “a few days”.

It added that the 86-year-old had been suffering from “frequent, painful and worsening” symptoms caused by an abdominal hernia.

Pope spent three days in the hospital with a respiratory infection in March – joking “I’m still alive!” When he was released from the hospital – and last month he had to skip attendance due to a fever.

Two years ago, I also removed 33 cm (13 inches) of my colon due to inflammation and distress in my large intestine.

He also lost part of one lung, which was removed as a young man in Argentina, and often uses a cane to walk due to knee pain.

Still, the pope appeared to be in good spirits before he was taken to hospital on Wednesday, using the Popemobile to greet people during his public audience in St. Peter’s Square.

The Vatican said he was then transferred to the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome for “plastic surgery of the abdominal wall and plastic surgery with prostheses”.

A laparotomy involves a large incision in the abdomen to examine the organs and diagnose or treat any problems.

The Vatican said: “The stay at the health facility will last several days to allow for a normal post-operative cycle and full functional recovery.”

The pope is lining up a busy summer, with a four-day trip to Portugal for World Youth Day at the start of August and a trip to Mongolia about four weeks later.
