Jodie Comer was forced to stop a show during a Broadway show after experiencing breathing difficulties due to air pollution caused by wildfires in Canada.

One woman’s play Prima Facie stopped after about 10 minutes, after the 30-year-old actress from Liverpool began coughing and told the stage manager she could not breathe.

It came as heavy smoke poured over the east coast of the United States and the midwest of Canada, causing dangerous levels of pollution.

On Wednesday, the Environmental Protection Agency said the state’s air quality was “unhealthy,” and citizens were warned to limit outdoor activity.

A spokesperson for the show said: “Today’s party at Prima Facie was halted about 10 minutes into the show after Jodie Comer had difficulty breathing due to poor air quality in New York City caused by smoke from Canadian wildfires.

“The performance was to start again from the top as understudy Danny Arlington would pass on to Ms. Comer as Tessa.”

Comer, also known for her role in the thriller series Killing Eve, plays British defense attorney Tessa, and was recently nominated for a Tony Award for her first role on Broadway.

The play received four Tony Award nominations at the 2023 ceremony after receiving critical acclaim in London’s West End, including Comer being named Best Actress at the 2023 Olivier Awards.

Canadian officials have been left asking other countries to help tackle more than 400 wildfires across the country, in what has been described as the worst wildfire season the country has ever seen.

Many Canadian citizens have been evacuated, including 7,500 in Chipugamau, the largest city in northern Quebec and about 4,000 residents of Cree Township, Mistestine.

The smoke pouring into the United States has intensified recently, as about 100 fires in Quebec are deemed out of control.

The unhealthy air has spread to North Carolina and Indiana, affecting millions of people, many of whom have begun wearing face masks in the era of the pandemic.

Zack Taylor, a US National Service meteorologist, said the weather pattern was mainly bringing the smoke into the United States.

He said the rain should help clear the air in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this weekend and into early next week, though more overall relief will come from containing or extinguishing the fires.
