The Met Office has predicted when the UK will have a “column of warm air being pulled in from the south” that will bring hotter and more turbulent conditions, and trigger the first healthy heat warning of the year.
The latest UK weather forecast comes after reports of the arrival of the ‘Iberian Plum’ from the Iberian Peninsula that runs through Spain and Portugal.
The current high pressure system responsible for the recent calm weather is now moving towards Scandinavia, giving way to hot air to move in, raising temperatures and introducing some thunderstorms later this week and into the weekend.
While Thursday is expected to remain largely quiet and a warm, sunny day for many, the transition is expected to begin on Friday, starting in the southwest.
The Met Office said a major shift in weather patterns in the UK is on the horizon as a “warm air column from the south” is set to dominate weekend weather patterns across the country.
The Met Office said temperatures were expected to reach 30C in some parts of the UK, ahead of thunder expected by the end of the week.
“Temperatures will rise later this week and into the weekend, with a plume of warm air pulling in from the south,” said Dan Harris, Met Bureau vice chief of meteorology.
“Temperatures over the weekend could peak at around 30C in some parts of England and remain well above average through the night.”
What is Iberian plum?
An Iberian plume is a weather phenomenon that brings hot air from the Iberian Peninsula – which runs through Spain and Portugal – towards the United Kingdom. It occurs when a high-pressure system over the Iberian Peninsula pushes warm air north, warming the UK.
A warm air mass from the Iberian Peninsula can bring heat waves and increase temperatures dramatically, often resulting in exceptionally warm and sunny conditions in the UK during the summer months.
Areas of eastern and north-eastern Scotland may see cooler temperatures due to easterly breezes, which result in persistent cloud cover. Coastal areas are also expected to be cooler than inland areas, as sea breezes keep temperatures from rising along the immediate coasts.
The forecaster said residents of Devon and Cornwall should prepare for the possibility of thunderstorms because warm air coming from the south increases the chances of rain.
The risk of a thunderstorm outbreak will gradually expand north and east throughout the weekend, with hail and high winds likely in some areas.
Storm Oscar, named by the Spanish Meteorological Service (AEMET), will not directly affect the UK, but it will contribute to pushing warm air into the southern regions, according to the forecaster.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow heat health alert in light of the impending heat wave, the first for this year.
Yellow Alert means hot weather may lead to increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable populations and increased health risks for those over 65 years of age along with those with pre-existing conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular disease bloody. He said.
The alert is currently in effect from 9am on Friday 9th June to 9am on Monday 12th June and if the current forecast temperatures are reached there is likely to be some impact across the healthcare and social sector.
“In the coming days, we are likely to see our first period of hot weather in the year so far, so it is important that everyone ensure they stay hydrated and cool while enjoying the sun,” said Dr. Agostinho Souza, Head of Extreme Events, Dr. Agostinho Souza Health Protection at UKHSA.
The expected temperatures this week will mainly affect people over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
Looking ahead, the Met Office said, it indicates that heavy rains may continue in some areas next week, with temperatures expected to remain above average.
